Has anyone noticed this
error when running SQL Server in a Win2k environment where a Samba service is also
running? This error was reported intermittently and I am not sure if it is
related to smb running.

If you are talking about MS SQL Server, then I am afraid that yes it
only runs on NT. However there are plenty of good SQL database
servers for Linux. I like Postgresql, but there is always mysql, and
a host of others. If you don't mind commercial databases there is

because the Engine is on one platform, most Clients are cross platform.
