Why not concentrate on telling him how to interpret the
fsck info, or how to recreate his X setup files, instead
of climbing onto a pile of soap crates?
It sounds like you run as root all the time. That is you
first and biggest mistake. It caused some
of the problems your having. I suspect there is no
fix for your current situation as files have been deleted
by your actions. If the worst you got was losing your preferences
you got off easy.

Anyway, if you had to recreate your /root directory then yes you are running everything
for the first time again. Try looking in the /lost+found directory to see if you can
retrieve anything.
