That's because it takes time before the NT server refreshes it's
browser lists.

yes, pretty much this has been my experience. If it doesn't work right,
reboot an few times, wait a while, reboot a few times. Sometimes removing
all networking (rebooting) reinstalling all networking (finding that damn
CD and rebooting) gets it working - but that's pretty much aiting and
rebootin

Frankly, this has been my exact experience. I think this is a "feature" of
Windows networking. I think I've observed the same sort of thing with
actual Windows95 machines...

Are you using share or user security? Are the shares themselves browseable?

preferred master = Yes
local master = Yes
domain master = Yes
restarted the smb server. this didn't help
