the scsi controler which bores me is an additional card, not a planar chip
there is another planar scsi chip (aic-7899) which works fine
my problem is really to know how to build and use a driver diskette

What kind of motherboard do you have? If you have one of those Intel 440?? something motherboard, use this parameter at the installation boot prompt:

You might try doing the "noprobe" install and then selecting the
OLD_AIC7XXX driver. I had the same problem with an AHA-2940U2W - full
hang on loading the driver...
