Your queued outbound mail is likely in
drwxrwx---2 smmspsmmsp4096 Aug 29 14:38 /var/spool/clientmqueue
and there you may be able to find the reason why the failure, too.

Thank you very much for your input. Your reply gave me the direction I
needed to fix the problem. It was so confusing when ther were so many
places to configure.
Anyway it is working now -- I had a BIKND setting that was confusing the
SMTP host.
