MySQL is easy to install with RPMs and allows programmers to interact with the
databse with php3 or PERL
But it doesn't provide "locking" features so you should investigate a product
called "guild" or "guile" to solve that problem.

Try interbase www.interbase.com. It become open source last month.
Support on Linux, Solary and Win NT at this moment. Very easy to install,
