I would write a bash script that would ping the gateway, and if it fails 3 times in a row (check the return code of ping), ifdown the main interface and ifup the ppp interface. You would have to manually fail it back over, however, so you probably want it to email you after the ifup is complete.

It's not a digital line, but you're getting no dialtone? Sounds like dry copper...in which case, your 56K modem still probably won't work...at that point, you need a "line driver"...still very much like a CSU/DSU. Maybe I'm a little ignorant on how phone lines work in Europe, or how modems opera

What I'd do, if I had the expansion slots, is to drop in some multi-port serial cards and let the Linux box be its own dialup server. mgetty. pppd. Cyclades makes decent ones, and they've been supporting Linux for years. This would at least be far cheaper than a stand-alone dialup box. -m On

Thanks for that Tobias but I still have a problem and for a Newbie it is more than a little confusing. I have managed to get the "make" command to run...I didn't have an RPM installed. When I do go "make" in the directory of /pci56/linux/src/module where there appears to be makefile and ptmodule.
