We use a similar setup, I have a vxa-1 tape drive with 33 GB native capacity backing up our linux server including users home directories. I use Arkeia softeware. The linux server is setup as a PDC and all users see drive H as their data directory when they log in from any machine. The workstation

I do believe that AMANDA will do this for you. It is only bound to actual partitions if you are using dump. Set it to use GNUTar. I am currently backing up a server (where AMANDA is running) with 3 entries: /home (own disk) /var (own disk) /etc (part of a file system) A
