populate smbpasswd
cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd
set smbpasswd with smbpasswd command for each user

Sure, check if you set
EncryptedPasswords = yes
If not Samba does not know what to do with the encrypted passwords

in the [homes] section. I changed it to yes and tried again. Still no
success. Windows 2000 was known to have problems with samba because of
password encryption, domain name controllers etc. Can this be related to
something like that ?
