can you `cat /var/log/messages` and see anything neat?
What else did you do besides re-compile the kernel? mkinitrd?

Subject: Problem with new kernel
> Hello Eve
Hello Everyone,
I am having a problem with my new kernel. I compiled 2.4.20 with the needed options
for my Dell I82k laptop. However, when I try to boo the kernel, the filesystems are
staying in ro state.
Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?
Thanks,
Chris

Installed new kernel 2.2.16 from rpm. Have a little problem. It wont load
the initscripts. It goes to freeing unused kernel memory and stops. I got
an error message on one boot attempt. Booting back to 2.2.14, everything
is fine.
