then chgrp audio /dev/audio, /dev/mixer and /de

Have you tired disabling Plug-n-Play in your BIOS? I had a problem with
sound on my pc, and once I changed Plug-n-Play from Yes to No it worked just
fine.

I have similar problems, the sound card can be probed and configured correctly. BUT
the sound "is not coming". In my case, it is the default sound volume too weak and you
have to make the room quiet or listen carefully. Then you realise that the thing is
working.

Have you tried /sbin/sndconfig (as root)?

I have installed ver 8.0 recently.
Everything seems to working fine except the Sound.
Sound is not coming. Linux recognizes the sound card as Intel 810 AC'97 but
sound is not coming.
I tried running 'aumix' but it gives an error: 'Error opening aumix'

when I run sndconfig, it recognises my sound board, and even plays the
sample correctly; however, when I crank up doom, it hangs, so that even
ctrlaltdelete doesn't work, and when I crank up netscape, the MIDIs that
automatically played under Win95 do not play at all under Linux.
