I don't know for sure, but it could be a miss-formatted RPC request (or
some random packages interpreted as an RPC request ?).

Comment out the "auth" line in /etc/inetd.conf, and restart inetd.

if it is trying ppp1 it sounds like there is already a ppp connection up. What does
ifconfig show?

Yeah, I got that message, also. The rpm installed the sendmail with extra
permissions on the group. I removed all permissions from group and the
error went away.

I'm getting the following message in /var/log/messages on two computers on
the same subnet. It reads as follows:
Apr 15 12:10:56 klondike kernel: ICMP: failed checksum from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Obviously the hostname and time/date are different each time
but the source is always the same.
