Can't change password

Recently when i try to change my linux (RH 6.1) password, passwd says: passwd: Critical error - immediate abort even in single user mode. can anybody helpme eith it, am i hacked? N‹§²æìr¸›zf¢–·…«eŠËkz«ž²ÚÞv­r‰°ŠØnžË›±Êâm欶’¹¸Þr
