To create a sym link called "linux" to a directory called "linux1" you would type "ln -s linux1 linux"
Otherwise try "man ln" at the command line to check out your options

I believe
all you have to do is run Xconfigurator from the terminal window, after you
have set-up X and it checks your configuration you will have an option to start
X automatically, choose no to this.
