locate searches a database of the files on your system so it is a bit
quicker. however, you have to keep this db updated for it to be of any
use. Make sure you run updatedb fairly regularly or right after you
update packages.

from the release notes:
DMA is disabled on CD-ROM drives in this release in a different but more
reliable way than
previously. If you are sure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of IDE
DMA, place the following
line in the /etc/modules.conf
options ide-cd dm
Not sure on the C compiling problem.
As far as your php working, RH8 shipped with apache 2.*** not 1.3**,
cannot remember the exact version numbers. I don't the PHP module
supports Apache 2 yet. So if you installed the Apache from the RH8
disks then you will probably need to revert to 1.3 f
