working examples for redhat linux platform.
i have some examples for steven's unix book but
compiling and linking the examples are consuming lots
of mine time.
hence i want to get some basic socket progamming

i created a user with adduser and made a directory for
him under /home.
but only the root has write permissions to his
directory. HOW can i change his directory permissions.
i have tried with chmod but it just won;t chamge its
permissions. probably i am missing something here

i am only able to run lynx as root.
how do i run lynx as an ordinary user.
error when running lynx as user other than root

it was all fine, but after i installed a package the
rpm seems to have messed up.
I mean if do a rpm -q -a ie I queried the rpm for all
installed packages it only shows me the package that i
just recently installed. ie only one package.
uptill now i could see all the packages installed.

i just installed a brand new install for redhat linux
6.2. every thing looks fine, i can ping others and
browse etc.
but actually i searched the /etc directory and found
that the file inetd.conf is missing. is it possible ?
do you know if anything has really gone wrong here ?

i have read the docs for recompiling kernel.
first why does one need to do. say i just installed
linux on my desktop, why would one recompile kernel.
one reason that comes to my mind is that if a newer
kernel has been made available and i would my box to
have that kernel. right ?
