Sendmail takes ages to do anything

Sendmail takes what seems a dreadfully long time to to anything - even reporting an empty mailqueue using mailq takes about 15 seconds (a similar installation on a different machine has no delay. There also seem to be delays in processing mail before it is delivered to mailboxes. Thanks, Nils
