Before uncompressing a tar.gz file, I highly recommend getting into the
habbit of looking what's in it first:
tar ztvf file.tar.gz
Be sure to note whether all the files are in the same base directory.
If not, create one and 'tar zxvf' into it.
There's few things more annoying than doing a 'tar

I dunno. 7.0 was already pretty much 2.4.0 ready, and the kernel
upgrade shouldn't break things, except maybe system utilities (which

I suspect that within 2 or 3 weeks we'll be seeing a beta release of Red

Will it default to the 2.4.1(?) kernel or install 2.2.18(19?) or will it
give you a choice at install time as to which to use? I'd hope that it

That looks like what I got when my box was cracked about 3 weeks ago.
Do a traceroute on the IP used to make the connection and it will
probably go through a router in Macau, China. You're screwed if they
got in.

/var/log/messages has no entries since jan 5. Permission is 600, so it
should be writable.

Internal network is 192.168.1.x. Server only has one IP, the one
assigned by the ISP (AT&T @Home).

Just thought I'd try this one again...
I'm masquerading a cable modem connection using a single ethernet card
in the server.
Most of the time, from the masq'd machine, either the entire Internet is
reachable or none is. But there have been a few times where some hosts
are reachable and others a

I'd be interested in knowing what other mainstream apps people have
successfully run under Wine recently. I know, there's the winehq
database, but vague comments, old records, and inflated ratings make it
rather useless.
Personally, I've been playing Stardock's Entrepreneur game, and it runs

Well my masquerading problems pop back up... sometimes everything works
great for several hours, but usually there are problems.
Both computers have their MTUs set at 1500. Is that good? Any other
ideas?

Does this list have magical properties?
Literally as soon as I hit "send" on that post it seems to have been
working great! I even watched streaming video over C-Span on the
masq'ed box.
Thanks Justin -- if it starts up again I'll check into MTU stuff.

Hi,
I'm trying to masquerade a cable modem connection (static IP) with a
couple other boxes. Problem is, from a masq'ed box, the Internet seems
to work in "spurts" -- i.e. I can access a Web page and/or check my
mail, and it will usually complete the transaction... but then I try to
access anyth

Hi,
I have two RH6.2 boxes connected to each other by Ethernet, a crossover
cable. Both have 3Com 905 cards.
The names are eclipse and nova. The weird thing is that nova MUST come
up first, or they won't talk to each other.
If I boot eclipse when nova is not on, eth0 is not activated. If I

Something along these lines should do it:
usermod -p `perl -e "print crypt('newpasswd', 'XX')"` userlogin
replace XX with a relatively random two charact
