Hi all
I have a need to connect two computers
using cat-5 cable and a nic in each.
I'm wondering if I need a 'different type of cable'
than the standard cat-5 cable one uses
when connecting more than two machines using a 'hub'.
In this situation I will 'not be using a hub'
just cat-5 cab
Hi Brian [and all the others who helped],
Thanks very much to all who gave me advice the last
couple of days.
The problems turned out to be mostly 'bad hardware'...
2 bad Nics and a bad cable.
Routing seems to work ok on two of the machines but I'm
having problems pinging between BOX-1 and
replace the nic on the second machine and
test it all again?
Thanks
Johnny

Hi Brian
Thanks for your help.
Is this what you are saying that I need to see in 'netstat -nr
after ppp connects?

I used to have a working home network of 2+ computers.
Currently I am using a Redhat Masqueraded/ Dialup Gateway Box and
a Win-95 workstation connected by a LinkSys 10baseT Hub.
I upgraded it from RH-5.2 [on a 486dx120] to
RH-6.1
[on a newer pentium box but with the 'same nic'/settings etc ]
Please tell us the method you used to setup
'WorldSpy.Net' in RedHat 6.1 ?
Many Thanks in advance.

for the Win-95 system...and apparently doesn't for Linux...
I am wondering how to accomplish a connection with them?
I am using RH 6.1.
Many thanks in advance.

Sorry guys,
Just found out that the nic/eth0 on Box-3 [ a dual booted Win-95/linux
Box]
is 'really dead' and am replacing it. I'll post when it is fixed.
Thanks for your patience.
Also I really thing my routing table on Box-2 is screwed up...

Thanks to all of you for the good advice.
Here is what I'm planning to...
Hopefully it is consistent with 'good practice' which I am trying to
learn.
Sorry for the length of the posting.
Let me know please if I can improve this plan in any way as
even though this is a home network I want to le
I have been using a 486-DX-120 [ using RH 5.2 and ipfwadm ] and have
been experimenting with the amount of RAM installed. I have been told
that ppp moves the data at the kernel level and a lot of ram is not
necessary.
I have tried using the setup with both 8 meg and 16 meg of ram and the

Hi Charles,
You helped me once before which I still appreciate greatly.
I have a reason for using the Win-95 Box as the dialup box.
I have a SupraSonic Dual Modem which I have not been able
to get to properly work with 'EQL' so am trying this
temporary solution.
I have set up a network with
Thank you Rick,
I did go on the Redhat site and checked the 'faqs'... but forgot
about the 'Gotchas' where I did find the following reccomendation
which worked perfectly.
Thanks again

Good morning all
I installed Redhat 6.1 on two machines and am having the same
printer problem [I think] on both of them.
The printer port worked in MS-DOS/Win95 previously...
but not in Linux on either machine.
I set the printer up using the 'PrintTool' from Gnome.
I checked the FAQ on the
e a bad combination with Win95 [OS2R] ?
Thanks in advance.
