Have you tried 'lsusb' while being logged in as root?
Try to see if your modem is found and identified by Linux in the output.
However, I suggest you buy a NIC card. It would be much easier to setup.

This looks like your drive does not support DMA access.
Check if it is enable with the following (as root)
hdparm /dev/hda
it should report an output looking like this:
/dev/hda:
multcount= 16 (on)

You have to configure your RH9 machine as a Gateway. This can be done
with iptables or ipchains.
You can check the following page for some scripts that will configure
your machine as a gateway.
