You can safely turn apmd off since, as you pointed out, is
more of a laptop thing; use chkconfig, or ntsysv, or some
other tool to change the startup links in /etc/rc.d/rcN.d/
(where N=runlevel).

doesn't really make a lot of sense to bind a process to a processor.
If you're interested in real-time performance, then what you need
to worry about (probably) is interrupt or I/O latency. An SMP system
just tends to lower the laten
