Thanks to each of you. Looks like we have a simple solution by just checking
remaining, as suggested. I appreciate pointing out that it was a runtime error,
so it definitely occurred and was not just a theoretical concern.

In case anyone is wondering about the current status:
I think everything is working fine now in the development version of
rgl, making use of a patched version of knitr. The alt text is taken
from fig.alt or fig.cap if that's missing. In Shiny, the alt text can
be changed as the state of the
