bars. How would you proceed. How can I root out "bad" package or whatever is
causing this?

Try starting R using the --vanilla flag. From the
Windows command line:
rem change next line appropriately if needed
cd \Program Files\R\R-2.9.1\bin
Rgui --vanilla
and see if it still happens.If that does not help
try reinstalling R and all packages.

As far as I know, the packages are up to date. I have had identical problems
on 2.9.1 as well as on 2.8.1. I did a fresh install of 2.9.1 to no avail.

upon running into a wonderful ggplot2 package by accident, I abruptly
encountered another problem. Almost every command run with ggplot2 results
in some sort of error. The one below is far the most common one. Kind people
from ggplot2 mailing list couldn't manage to solve
