this is very typical for, at least, mailman-supported, e-mail lists.
the password is of low intrinsic value, as it only allows you to change
your membership and options on the list.

If there were problems associated with this behavior that were worse than the
problems with not having it, it probably would have been changed after decades
of being this way.
