I use Wordpress.com (free public version) and add my R scripts by using
simple html wrap around my script.

I have found a partial solution to this. Wordpress will only chew the
first <- on a given post. Therefore, I add a comment with a <-.
e.g.
# <-
hello <- c(1,2,3)
WP will only break the first <-.
