I've found it nessessary to do
su
R CMD javareconf
After java updates. Then install/update JGR etc. if desired.
Note that for whatever reason 'sudo R CMD javareconf' doesn't seem to
work for me, I have to actually become root with su and then run R CMD
javareconf
