Direct hit! Your guess was right.
After removing line 24 in po/Makefile.in.in all went fine.
R-beta_2008-08-16_r46368.tar.gz now compiles and installs perfect on
FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT.

But the BSD-like makes on Solaris and MacOS have no problem with it.
