I also use gentoo, and choose to prioritize ebuilds over source installs. Although the above is true, sip/PyQt/PyKDE installs are very clean and easy to remove. I use snapshots at will, knowing that I can simple install an ebuild over them, or manually remove them fairly easily. Go for

Are you aware of http://pytables.sourceforge.net ? It is not exactly what you are asking for: it may be to high level (you can do all in Python using numarray). PyTables looks interesting, but it this stage we mostly want to interchange heavyweight data between C, C++ and Python

I have dev-python/sip-4.1.1, dev-python-PyQt-3.13 and a snapshot of pykde, because pykde refused to compile with kdelibs-3.4.0. Normally, pykde 3.11.3 works with kde 3.4, sip 4.1.1 and pyqt 3.13, but the ebuild for pykde is incorrect, because it depends on kdelibs <= 3.3.4. You have some choi
