I'm having a puzzling time trying to figure out how to work around the issue
of the session_id not existing after making calls to session_start and
session_id to generate an session. It seems that by set_si() calling
session_id and seeing if there is a value, doesn't not work. Hence,

ok, that works.
However, any user on the system can read db.inc cause its chmod'd 0644.
If I chmod db.inc 0600 or even 0640, index.php can not include it.

You're right. It is not discuessed there. My memory served me incorrectly.
In index.php (the file loaded by php), 'echo( $HTTP_POST_VARS["last_name"]
);' will print the variable contents, but in save_script.php (the 3rd file
included) the same function call will print nothing.

just do:
global $HTTP_POST_VARS;
extract($HTTP_POST_VARS);
...to account for the scope of the form vars.

everything? For example HM_function_name()
