Disappointed that there was no response to this message, I nevertheless seemed
to have solved the problem by adding "AddHandler php-script .php" to the
stanza for my /cgi-bin/ directory. For the archives, in case anyone
is searching for this answer, too.

Yeah, I thought it was a long-shot. I'm actually meeting with the coordinator in 10
minutes, and one of the things I'm asking for is shell access to the host. I have no
idea what Linux or Unix (God help me if it's NT) on a Russian host looks like.
