Found it! I had just set up a fresh virtual machine to build this and
I had not installed libgtk2.0-dev. You output was a big help.

I think I may have shut pan down with a jpeg displayed in the body pane,
and now pan crashes while trying to reload that image during startup:

it built fine and I'm using it to send this so apparently it runs fine in
