Mostly you echoed my thoughts, but I didn't think about the spam stuff

I haven't done it, but I understand you can save from 0.14.x to .newsrc
files that can be used by the new pan.

1. Re .pan2 location - I'd not heard of environment variables before but
a quick search reveals plenty of information - so looks like its time to
do some reading : )
2. re 'Save' dialog - its not a big problem and easy enough to do whats
been said.
