read through the xml files for a likely option with no luck. Is there an
entry I can make in preferences.xml to force pan to default to adding new
downloads to the back of the queue instead of in aged order?

The 0.119 source tarball is available at http://pan.rebelbase.com as
usual. After you untar it, you can read the usual README and INSTALL
documentation files. They are general, but list the usual dependencies,
