I admit the user was sort of stretching the limits but (on his machine)
import numpy
a=numpy.ones((16800,60,96),'f')
numpy.sort(a,axis=0)
works
import numpy.ma
a=numpy.ma.sort((16800,60,96),'f')
numpy.ma.sort(a,axis=0)
failed with some malloc error:
