Yes, you can. I usually don't, as source trees often contain random
bits of documentation and information that don't get copied to the
install tree. Backup to a CD before removing would be a good compro

I want to install Mailman here to replace majordomo for a few mail lists.
My system includes postfix-2.5.2 and httpd-2.2.12, as well as the latest
Mailman version downloaded at the end of last week.
With the source in /usr/local/mailman I ran './configure
