does mailman have the ability to determine if the recipient can receive
HTML or a text message and send the appropriate message? if so, how is
this managed? if not, can anyone recommend how to go about setting
something like this up?

well, it took me a couple hours to get mailman v2.1.2 running on OS X
server 10.2.6. i thought i'd share some pitfalls.
