Or is that only used when the list is created for setting the initial
value for the "host name this list prefers for email"? If that's the
case I might just set it now so I don't forget later while creating
lists on the box.

companies went under, and had to go back to good old dial-up), I doubt a
couple patches to Mailman would change the size that much. Plus, it already
requires Python, and last I checked that was pretty big :>
