It's not a huge request, but anything to prevent me from having
to chase down list admins coudl be helpful.

If your list is being archived, you might want to see if the archive
has grown excessively large.

For searching, I personally use the list archives found at
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/ rather than the one at python.org.
The searches are fast, and there are actually several technical
lists there that I read/search (bind, dhcp).
It's all database driven...probably a lot more than you'd want
If you have archiving enabled, check the size of the archive if this
is a high traffic list.
