To everyone that answered my question, thank you very much! By trying
some of the suggestions I spotted a simple mistake, that was most likely
the problem.
When I initially ran mhonarc on both lists i created, to convert existing
archives, I did so as root, and I chmod the directories so mailman

> messages are archived automatically...
I'm sorry, I did a poor job proof reading, this should read that the
messages are NOT being archived automatically!

I am testing mailman for use at my university, and we want to be able to
support different MIME types in the archives. I've installed Mhonarc and
I followed the directions of a very helpful list member from an earlier
post to the group. When I manually run:
mhonarc -mbox $prefix/archives/private
