You have to compile inside from a valid local checkout to have the call
to mercurial successfully get the revision number during the compilaton.

Yes I had mercurial installed the whole time.
$apt-get install
shows
"mercurial is already the newest version (5.3.1-1ubuntu1)."

You most probably used an older source code or a wrong revision.
It's best to do a checkout from the repo that guide links in the top and build
from that - it'll result a correct revision info printed as well.
It shoud show "This hub is running ADCH++ 3.0.1 (r"ec462716f140 - 2022-05-18
