i tried switching to English, thinking it might be a problem with German, but

It's probably very difficult to do, as a lot of payees will clutter the report.
Anyway, nothing has changed. I'd propose it'd be marked as "won't fix" and
close the report

Well, the easiest way is to just enable a graphical view of the already
available "transactions by payee". That of course would seriously clutter the
chart with too many lines, but one could adjust the filter/sort

And, additionally, if there was a possibility to select/deselect payees on the
right or left side of the report, right in the graphical view, that would make
it easier to check specific people.
