It looks like update-grub failed due to a possible configuration error
in /etc/default/grub:

ifmetric is a package that sets route metrics - which seems awfully
pointless, 'metric' is already supported natively by ifupdown and by
netplan. This does not need integration.
(The only possible utility is that ifmetric lets you set metrics on the
route for the local network, which netplan does
ifupdown-scripts-zg2 no longer exists in Ubuntu as of bionic.

vzctl is a set of tools for OpenVZ, a very early container technology
which I think it's fair to say is obsoleted by lxd. For anyone running
openvz, it would still matter to have vzctl integration with networkd,
but I think this would be a low priority to fix.
