With a normal boot, I get the splash screen and a prompt to enter my
encrypted disk password. Input is not accepted apart from ctrl-alt-
delete.
With quiet + splash removed, I get no further output after setting up
the initial ramdisk.

This may be related to Bug 1432659. Also, per Bug 1434136 this laptop is
running the latest version of the bios that boots Linux (F.24).

It seems that this is a regression from Utopic.
I just booted a Utopic USB stick, switched on the proprietary driver,
and connected to my wifi network. I then performed 10 suspend/resumes in
sequence (using suspend from the system menu), and they all worked

Unfortunately this machine requires a working Broadcom driver to do
anything useful, and it would need to run the updated kernel for several
