I use Ubuntu 22.04 in VMWare Player 17.0.2 (Windows host, due to
corporate IT...). I installed the HWE kernel since I have an Intel CPU
with P/E-cores. 3D acceleration is enabled in VMWare.

HDMI port on this laptop the external screen flickers briefly then I get

Interesting addendum: xrandr on the new kernel only shows the eDP-1,
DP-1 (disconnected) and DP-2 (connected to external display).
With the older kernel I also see DP-1-0 to DP1-5 and of course HDMI-1-0.
So it seems the newer kernel just fails to discover a lot of the
available outputs.

I have tried the latest 6.8.0-45-generic, the issue is not fixed. And it
is way past the Sep 30th. So this should be reopened.

In fact, reading that bug you linked, the symptoms are completely
different, so I don't see why you thought they were related to begin
with.

This is still broken with 6.11.0-17 (HWE kernel). I still have to use
6.8.0-41. Seems like the Ubuntu developers are completely ignoring this
bug.
