In /etc/default/grub, I added the following kernel parameter:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.enable_dc=0"
Then run sudo update-grub and restart your computer.
This disables GPU power management.
It still freezes for a while, but then it is released and it seems to
