Further info
I've just rebooted the laptop using the kernel that was left over from the
upgrade from groovy.
The mmc card reader works OK there.
A reboot back to the latest hirsute kernel has it failing again.
So:

Can you please try 20.04 with kernel 4.15?
How? I am not a Linux guru, only an expert system (both hardware and
software) designer. Apparently the kernel coders made some assumptions
about the hardware. I will continue to use 18.04 until one of the “updates”
actually works.
P.S. I only recommend
Over the weekend I was finally able to revert back to the previous versions
of the org.freedesktop.Platform and org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default
flatpak runtimes. It turns out that the `flatpak history` command wasn't
necessay for the rollback.
