We are still seeing this issue and still working on tracking it down.
We've done some tracing to track all of the refcount changes by stack
when this occurs. However, the refcount is manipulated from many
different contexts, making it difficult to identify which increment is
the odd one out.

Thanks, I've installed that firmware update and will give it a try.
As I expected, disabling bluetooth in BIOS didn't resolve the issue.
Apparently in the Dell XPS 13 9730 the wifi card is soldered to the
motherboard, so replacing it is sadly not an option.

I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial, placed a
heavy load on the system.
Everything seemed stable and no lockups occurred. Due to the successful
tests in the hadoop environment under bionic and the nature of this
patch being from upstream stable, I am happy to mark this as
I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial, and
ensured the -modules and -modules-extra package was installed.
I went into /var/lib/modules/4.15.0-56/ and did a search for hibmc_drm.
There was no mention apart from a header Makefile. The module was not
built and not present on am
I installed linux-hwe 4.15.0-57 #63~16.04.1-Ubuntu on xenial.
I have run the reproducers on both bionic and xenial, and both have
positive results. This has been tested in the kubernetes environment
which had issues, and is performing well.
I am happy to mark this as verified for xenial.

entire display image. So it's not traditional "tearing", but I totally
agree that "tearing" and "flickering" is the best description.

initramfs-* packages installed in the first place. So when it's
configuring linux-firmware, all those tools are in unpacked state except
initramfs-tools-bin has been full setup then. So this happened in some

OK, so I booted up with the mouse in USB3 port. All good.
Put mouse in USB2 port. Problem appears (as expected).
