I have tracked this down to mpris-proxy not being able to connect to
media-hub because of GetProperties seemingly being broken in media-hub.

This just happened again, linux-image-4.4.0-31-generic 4.4.0-31.50,
16.04. It certainly happens less often with 16.04 than it did in 15.04
and previous.

Issue is solved with both v4.8-rc3, intel-daily and indel next. But with
them I get visual artifacts (shaddow mouse, jarred icons...)

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer

Xrandr gamma and brightness problem on 4.4.0-34 kern

Brightness keys donot repond, Brightness controls on xfce4_power_manager
behave as expected. Either kernel is not recognizing the fn+f5/f6
commands or their is a problem with my configuration.
