After applying the security update to the linux kernel, the boot process failed.
Summary:
Grub load, empty purple screen appears and disappears,

OK, after formatting the SD on a windows machine, it was correctly
detected again. However, this also coincided with the kernel upgrade to
3.16.0-30-generic. I *think* I tried it with the new kernel and it
didn't work but it's possible I'm misremembering.
In any case, my issue is resolved for now.
Okay, found it. Somehow I got the parameter psmouse.proto=bare in my
grup. Sorry for bothering you Mathias and thanks for the fix. Happy user

Thomas, if the card file system is corrupted or the SD card has hardware
failure, no OS may be able to read it, and it would need to be
reformatted or replaced respectively.
In your case, what would want to be investigated is what sequence of
events specifically led up to the presumed corrupted SD
It's a new pc, so it was a fresh install. I had the same issue with
archlinux and linux mint. It affect 3.12 -3.16 kernels.
Installing 3.19 seems to fix the problem, about a day without
disconnection. I'll add the kernel-fixed-upstream tag.

1. Bluetooth doesn't work at all. The device is detected properly and
the driver is apparently installed, but no connection can be
established.
2. WiFi connection is half so strong as with other devices or the same

If this isn't really simple to find and correct, it may be important
that I remember having restarted the install. Maybe the install doesn't
set the flags immediately, and won't set them if it finds a previous
partitioning?

Brightness control does not work on this system.
The brightness level indicator would change with hotkey events, but the
brightness itself would only change with the last two steps.

Same bluescreen again on day 9 after the kernel upgrade.
So upgrading Kernel from 3.13 to 3.16 did not help.
Still looking for a fix.

Same bluescreen STOP: 0x005c again on day 9. So it has not been
fixed by a kernel upgrade to 3.16.0-23-generic with above method from
askubuntu.com.

I tried to install linux-image-generic-lts-utopic 3.16.0.30.23 on Lenovo
X1 3rd Carbon. After system reboot, the 3 keys of touchpad are still
useless.

I have applied it because I have been suffering from occasional random
loss of connectivity to my own wifi routers.
I have not yet encountered another router that triggers the original
crash that I reported in this particular bug,
