That test kernel was ppc64, not ppc64el, so I'm curious how you booted
into a ppc64el userspace to note that it was broken at all...

Could well be, but I don't know enough about the internals of hid-rmi to

I again get a broken desktop after suspend, however I have enough
control to be able to eventually get control of a dumb console tty and
produce the attached dmesg output. There are obvious complaints from
the nouveau

I have tested the latest upstream kernel even more, and I have noticed
something that may or may not help. I have found a "degradation effect"
in which the total length of time the connection is hung within a given
time frame increases the longer the system is running. To illustrate
this effect,
